The barriers for institutions adopting Ethereum are gradually being removed. In the past, institutions wanted to use Ethereum, but privacy was a dealbreaker.
Now, the former 'Enterprise Privacy Group' from the Ethereum Foundation has spun off to start a company dedicated to solving privacy issues for institutions. The goal? To make Ethereum truly usable for large-scale adoption by traditional financial institutions.
Specifically, this is a team that used to work at the Ethereum Foundation under the 'Enterprise Privacy Task Force,' focusing on how to enable big institutions (banks, asset management firms, central banks, etc.) to conduct real business on Ethereum while maintaining confidentiality.
Now, they've branched out from the foundation to establish this for-profit company, continuing to focus on this mission.
What problem are they solving?
Ethereum is a public ledger, meaning all transactions are visible to the world.
However, when institutions conduct real financial business (stablecoins, tokenized assets, settlements, etc.), they can't let everyone see everything. What needs to remain confidential includes:
• What they’re buying
• Who they’re transacting with
• How funds are flowing
This is a matter of trade secrets and compliance. So, while institutions have always wanted to use Ethereum, they've been stuck at the 'privacy' hurdle.
EthSystems aims to build a system of 'on-demand privacy' for institutions: letting the right people see what they need to see, while keeping others out, all while ensuring compliance, usability, and decent performance.
Over the past year, they've done a lot of open-source work, including:
• Private bonds
• Confidential stablecoin transfers
• Cross-chain private settlements
• Ethereum privacy mapping
• Various technical prototypes
Benefits of starting a company:
Institutions need commercial services (contracts, clear accountability, paid support).
The foundation is better suited for purely public goods. By becoming independent, they can continue open-sourcing some of their work while also taking on paid projects.
