[Korean Stock Market Crash Reenacting the Asian Financial Crisis? Analysis Firms Claim Korea's Current Financial Risks Are Structurally Similar to the 1996 Asian Financial Crisis]
Odaily Planet Daily News: In response to the recent sharp decline in the Korean stock market, the domestic independent global macro research institution Tantou Macro previously published an article stating that Korea's current financial risks bear structural similarities to the period before the 1996 Asian Financial Crisis (AFC): semiconductor exports account for 41% (16% in 1996), foreign holdings in the stock market have reached a historical peak of 40%, and external debt/GDP has risen to 39.6%. However, key differences include:
1) Adequate foreign reserves (ARA) at 92% (only 54% before the AFC), with the proportion of short-term external debt reduced to 9.4% (11.5% before the AFC);
2) A free-floating exchange rate replacing the soft peg, reducing the risk of a run;
3) Slower corporate leverage growth and lower bank non-performing loan rates compared to the AFC period.
Currently, risks are primarily concentrated in the stock market: the KOSPI price-to-book ratio at 2x and price-to-earnings ratio at 30x have both hit record highs, while margin financing balances have doubled in a year and a half to 38.6 trillion won. The Financial Stability Index indicates overall risk at the 62nd percentile historically (yellow warning zone), with valuation metrics reaching the 91st percentile. Model calculations estimate a 5% probability of Korea experiencing negative growth in the next year, but the risk of a vicious cycle is significantly lower than during the AFC, mainly due to enhanced foreign reserve buffers and increased exchange rate flexibility. Over the past 30 years, recessions of this magnitude have only occurred three times.
Core warning: If the semiconductor cycle reverses or Federal Reserve tightening triggers foreign capital outflows, the stock market could become the central conduit for risk transmission.
