After the $1.7M USDT incident at Gate, did the funds really leave? Don’t think this has nothing to do with you—when an avalanche happens, no one is innocent!
A lot of people are discussing:
Did facial recognition get hacked at Gate?
Who’s responsible?
Will there be compensation?
But as an on-chain data observer, I’m more focused on another question:
Did the money leave?
Because there’s a rule in the market:
Users can lie.
Projects can spin PR.
Emotions can amplify.
But funds don’t lie.
After the incident blew up, I took a look at on-chain and exchange fund flow data and found something interesting.
According to recent publicly cited DefiLlama fund flow stats, Gate saw a net outflow of about $27M in the week following the incident. Compared to the scale of FTX’s bank run back in the day, it’s not huge, but it does show that some funds have started to leave.
What does this mean?
It means the market’s real concern isn’t the $1.7M USDT anymore.
It’s trust.
Because if an account that simultaneously enables:
* Phone verification
* Email verification
* Google verification
* Facial recognition
can still be taken over, users will start to rethink one question:
Is it truly safe to keep funds on a centralized exchange?
And this is precisely the most dangerous part of this incident.
Losing $1.7M USDT isn’t scary.
Losing trust is.
Because the biggest asset of an exchange has never been bitcoin:native or USDT.
It’s the belief that when users log in tomorrow, their money will still be there.
So what we need to watch next isn’t the price or trending topics—it’s the funds.
If funds start flowing back in the next few weeks, it means the market has accepted Gate’s explanation. If funds continue to flow out, then this crisis has only just begun.
Remember: Users can lie, emotions can amplify, but funds don’t lie.
Losing $1.7M USDT is losing assets, but losing trust could mean the future of the entire exchange is at stake. If Gate can be hacked like this, could other exchanges face the same issue? That’s the truly terrifying part!
