Saw the discussion about the http://(Gate.io) old user theft incident. Not going to comment much on the specifics.
Just want to share a real case about KYC live detection:
Before 2019, after registering with a real ID card name and number, you only needed to extract a photo and make a dynamic video—turn your head left and right, blink, nod up and down—to pass the live detection and complete verification.
After 2021, many apps upgraded to require gesture poses, iris recognition, and even recent photos from the past 3-6 months. But with simulated photos and videos, it was still possible to smoothly complete Level 1 identity verification and Level 2 advanced video verification. The withdrawal process was similar.
This is just a technical example from past practices.
On centralized platforms, KYC is a double-edged sword. While platform risk controls are constantly upgrading, users' security awareness and asset autonomy are equally important. Make sure to protect your account, ID numbers, photos, and other information—try not to expose them. I’ve turned off all location and photo privacy permissions, only enabling them when needed and turning them off immediately after use.
Security is no small matter—let’s all stay vigilant and work together to avoid falling victim to bad actors!
