According to Bloomberg, the U.S. Department of Justice plans to drop criminal charges against BitClub Network founder Matthew Goettsche and close the case with prejudice, pending final terms to be confirmed by both parties. Goettsche was indicted in 2019, with prosecutors accusing him of operating a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme from 2014 to 2019. The scheme allegedly raised approximately $722 million illegally through a fake Bitcoin mining business and a pyramid recruitment model, involving conspiracy to commit wire fraud and the sale of unregistered securities. The trial was originally scheduled for October this year. The DOJ stated that the case has been ongoing for nearly seven years and is now focused on recovering part of the investors' losses. They also clarified that the decision to drop the charges is unrelated to lobbying efforts by his attorneys.
