OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work and integrates the original ChatGPT and Codex desktop apps into a single product.
The new app is divided into three sections: Chat handles Q&A and discussions, Work focuses on research, analysis, and delivering documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites, while Codex continues to handle coding, terminal tasks, and software engineering.
This division signals that OpenAI is actively moving away from the 'cram everything into a chatbox' phase of product development.
Work utilizes Codex's agent technology and GPT-5.6. Users can directly describe the desired outcome, and it will break down the steps, call authorized apps and files, and allow for modifications or approvals during execution.
OpenAI revealed that Codex now has over 5 million weekly users, with more than 1 million using it for tasks beyond software development.
ChatGPT Work feels more like a formal productization of these real-world use cases rather than creating new demand out of thin air.
For OpenAI, this update addresses two key issues.
First, Codex is no longer just a developer tool. Its accumulated capabilities in computer operations, long task execution, and file handling can now be distributed to sales, finance, operations, and research professionals through Work.
Second, ChatGPT, Codex, plugins, and local files are now consolidated into a single entry point.
This creates pressure for Agent products and traditional automation tools that only handle individual steps: users may no longer be willing to purchase separate software for each process.
