Mitsui Sumitomo Trust Bank announced on July 9 that it has launched a proof-of-concept experiment aimed at tokenizing the beneficiary rights of a Cayman Islands-registered Money Market Fund (MMF) on a public blockchain—marking the first such initiative by a trust bank in Japan. The tokenized beneficiary rights will be treated as digital securities, with technical support provided by Securitize and Fireblocks. Mitsui Sumitomo Trust Bank plans to issue the fund within the 2026 fiscal year and aims to leverage this experimental experience to build an open infrastructure with digital securities issuance and management capabilities. This infrastructure will be available for asset management companies, sales firms, and Web3 enterprises, with the goal of enabling instant delivery-versus-payment (DvP) settlements with stablecoins, smart contract-driven automated interest payments, and 24/7 cross-border transactions.
