According to Cryptopolitan, FBI complaint data shows that around 1,200 people in Texas lost a total of $56.8 million last year due to cryptocurrency ATM scams, ranking first in the U.S. and roughly double the amount in Florida. Currently, Texas has no regulatory rules for crypto ATMs, but prosecutors and sheriffs are pushing the state legislature to regulate or outright ban them. The Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center stated that victims typically have only 36 to 48 hours to recover their funds. As of July 1, the city of San Antonio requires bilingual English-Spanish warning labels on all 193 ATMs in the city, with non-compliant operators facing fines of $100 to $500 per machine per day.
