[Texas Residents Lose $56.8 Million to Cryptocurrency ATM Scams in One Year]
According to Cryptopolitan, data released by law enforcement agencies in Texas reveals that residents of the state have suffered financial losses totaling as much as $56.8 million over the past year due to cryptocurrency ATM scams. Incomplete statistics indicate that approximately 1,200 Texas residents have fallen victim to such scams.
The typical modus operandi of cryptocurrency ATM scams involves fraudsters impersonating government officials or corporate employees over the phone, falsely claiming that the victim is involved in legal issues or owes debts. They then instruct the victim to visit a cryptocurrency ATM to convert cash into cryptocurrency and transfer it to a designated address. Due to the irreversible nature of cryptocurrency transactions and a certain degree of anonymity, once funds are transferred, recovery becomes extremely difficult.
