"Spain is a wasted cause." Those were President Donald Trump's blunt words at the latest NATO summit. 🇪🇸🇺🇸
But why is one of America's oldest allies suddenly at odds with Washington? 🤔
The answer begins more than 70 years ago. In 1953, Spain granted the United States access to key military bases, including Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base, giving Washington a strategic foothold in Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa.
Despite decades of cooperation, defense spending has become the biggest source of tension.
Spain rejected NATO's new long-term goal of spending 5% of GDP on defense, saying it would be too costly.
Trump responded with his strongest criticism yet, threatening trade and declaring,
"We don't want to do any trade business with Spain anymore... Cut off all trade with Spain... Watch them come running back."
It reflects a growing debate inside NATO over who should pay for Europe's defense and how the alliance should share the burden.🇪🇺
Is this just a disagreement over defense spending, or a sign of deeper divisions within NATO?
