[Chrome Updates App Store Policy Starting August 1: Classifies Prediction Markets as Regulated Goods, Strictly Controls Extension Data Collection]
According to the Google Developers Blog, the Chrome Web Store (extension marketplace) will update its Developer Program Policy and enforce it strictly starting August 1, 2026. The new regulations explicitly classify prediction markets as regulated goods, prohibiting extensions that facilitate real-money transactions based on prediction outcomes. User data collected by extensions must only be used for a single, pre-disclosed purpose and cannot be repurposed. All data collection activities must be prominently disclosed to users, and if data handling practices change after installation, developers must proactively inform users. Additionally, new clauses have been added to prohibit extensions from bypassing AI service security protections, usage restrictions, and other safeguards. Extensions in violation may face forced removal or other actions.
