According to a report by Cointelegraph, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has called on Congress to ban elected officials and their spouses from issuing or sponsoring their own digital assets, including meme coins. Gillibrand stated that this restriction should apply to the U.S. President and their spouse, members of Congress, and others, emphasizing that public officials and their spouses should not issue meme coins. She argued that self-serving actions must not undermine legislative efforts to enhance consumer protection, combat illicit finance, and expand financial opportunities. The report noted that Gillibrand is one of the participants in the Senate's Digital Asset Market Structure Bill negotiations, which have previously faced delays due to issues like ethics, tokenization, and stablecoin rewards.
