Robinhood's Ethereum L2 chain is now live. In the short term, the direct impact on the Ethereum ecosystem is limited, but in the long term, it's clearly bullish. Robinhood Chain uses Ethereum blobs DA + ETH as the gas token, leveraging Arbitrum Orbit technology. Long-term potential impacts: 1️⃣ One of the most important impacts is the potential increase in blob demand, boosting L1 revenue. Robinhood Chain uses Ethereum blobs for data availability (DA), with each batch of transaction data submitted to L1. This directly increases L1's blob space consumption, raising L1's blob fee revenue (which goes to block proposers/validators, similar to how calldata transitioned to blobs). How much this grows depends on Robinhood's user base and the growth of RWA transaction volume. If it drives up blob demand, it’s a tangible benefit to L1's economic model. 2️⃣ Increased demand for ETH (Gas + Burn) Gas fees for transactions on L2 are paid in ETH, which will consume more ETH. At the same time, blob submissions on L1 will also partially burn base fees via the EIP-1559 mechanism, further reinforcing ETH's deflationary nature. If Robinhood's massive retail/institutional user base brings tokenized stocks, DeFi, and other activities into the mix, ETH's use cases will expand even further. 3️⃣ Robinhood drives ecosystem expansion and user onboarding. Robinhood is a key bridge between traditional finance and crypto finance. By building its own Ethereum L2, it has the potential to bring a large number of traditional users (especially stock/ETF users) into the Ethereum ecosystem. Assets on L2 can easily bridge to L1 DeFi (lending, liquidity, etc.), indirectly boosting L1's TVL, liquidity depth, and overall activity. 4️⃣ Strengthening Ethereum's position as the global settlement layer. If Robinhood sets a strong example, other major institutions/platforms are more likely to choose Ethereum L2 for their builds, further enhancing Ethereum's security and network effects.
