U.S. Supreme Court today ruled 6-3 that President Trump could remove Rebecca Slaughter (D) as a member of the Federal Trade Commission. Trump fired Slaughter from the FTC in March 2025 before her term was scheduled to end in 2029. The ruling overturned a 91-year-old precedent in the 1935 Humphrey's Executor v. U.S. decision that restricted the president’s power to fire heads of "independent" regulatory agencies. Chief Justice Roberts in writing for the majority in Trump v. Slaughter argued on December 8: "Subordinates who exercise the President’s power are subject to removal by him.
