With the full implementation of the MiCA licensing framework, Europe’s crypto industry is undergoing a new wave of reshuffling. The French Financial Markets Authority previously estimated that about 40% of France’s registered crypto service providers have not applied for a MiCA license. Some institutions have proactively withdrawn their applications, sought partnerships, or ceased operations.
As of now, approximately 230 MiCA licenses have been issued across the EU, with Germany leading at 56 licenses, followed by the Netherlands and France with 26 and 21 licenses, respectively. France had hoped to become a major crypto hub in Europe by being the first to introduce a crypto regulatory framework, but some platforms ultimately opted for other jurisdictions perceived to have faster approvals and clearer rules.
Industry insiders believe that while MiCA has strengthened the resilience of the industry, it has also reduced market diversity, with smaller crypto companies being hit the hardest. (Les Echos)
