[The U.S. Government Reportedly Requests OpenAI to Release the Latest Model GPT-5.6 in Phases]
According to a report by Jinse Finance on June 26, a source familiar with the matter revealed that the Trump administration has requested OpenAI to release an upcoming powerful AI model in phases. Less than two weeks ago, the company's competitor, Anthropic PBC, suspended access to its cutting-edge model under regulatory pressure.
The source, who requested anonymity due to the non-public nature of the discussions, stated that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees on Wednesday that the U.S. government has asked the company to first release GPT-5.6 to a small group of trusted partners before rolling it out to a broader user base.
The source further noted that Altman mentioned during an employee meeting that the U.S. government is increasingly concerned about the performance of cutting-edge models. He emphasized that even if OpenAI does not agree, it must comply with any feedback from the Trump administration regarding safety and restriction measures for the latest model.
The source added that Altman did not explicitly reference the Anthropic incident.
