Sentient Foundation announces $42 million investment to advance funding and investment in open-source general artificial intelligence On June 25th, according to official sources, the Sentient Foundation announced the launch of the "Open Source General Artificial Intelligence Funding and Investment Program", committing $42 million to support developers, researchers, and startups who build and apply general artificial intelligence in an open manner. This is currently one of the largest open source general artificial intelligence special commitments. Among them, the funding channel is open to researchers, open source maintainers, independent developers, and public interest projects. Financial support does not require equity, does not advocate ownership, and does not limit the future development of the project. The awardee will retain ownership of their work results and knowledge contributions, while receiving the necessary financial support for ongoing open construction. The investment channel is aimed at startups and teams exploring commercialization around open-source AI technology. The relevant investments will adopt a standardized and founder friendly structure to help potential teams expand their operational scale, while making openness one of the core principles of their development. The application project will be evaluated from dimensions such as technical capability, ecological impact, openness, and long-term potential. To guide the progress of the program, the Sentient Foundation is forming an advisory committee composed of senior members from the open-source AI community to jointly develop funding priorities and ensure that the program truly responds to the needs of the communities it serves. The Sentient Foundation states that applying for a project does not require all components in the technology stack to be open sourced. Applicants need to demonstrate that at least one key component of the project is open and usable, and has made substantial contributions to the value and adoption of the project. The plan was launched with the support of an expanding ecosystem network, including Alibaba Cloud, Franklin Templeton, as well as academic institutions such as Princeton University and the Indian Institute of Science. More partners are expected to be announced in the coming months.
