[Nanjing Cracks Largest Domestic Gold Theft Case, Main Suspect Caught at Border After Using Gold Chip to Pay Fare]
According to the Chongzuo Border Management Unit, the main suspect, Tong Mou, in the "5·16" major gold theft case in Nanjing, Jiangsu, was successfully intercepted while fleeing to the China-Vietnam border. The case involved 27 kilograms of gold, valued at over 27 million RMB, making it the largest gold theft case in terms of value in the country to date. Police revealed that after committing the crime, Tong fled southward over 2,000 kilometers by ride-hailing car. Lacking cash to pay the fare of over 7,000 RMB, he even broke off half of a 50-gram gold chip to cover the cost. He was ultimately apprehended just 100 meters from the border. Police subsequently arrested all 11 suspects involved and recovered all the stolen gold.
