According to Al Jazeera, the situation in Lebanon escalated today. It started with Israeli airstrikes on the south, accompanied by mandatory evacuation orders for 29 towns and villages, most of which are in the Nabatieh district. However, some are located in areas as far north as Sidon and beyond the so-called Yellow Line, a part of southern Lebanon that Israel has long sought to control and occupy.
The entire country of Lebanon is tense today, as people here understand that the moment a U.S.-Iran agreement is reached—or indeed after the agreement is signed—is often a dangerous time for Lebanon. They are almost bracing for what seems inevitable: an Israeli strike, a provocation that could trigger an Iranian response and jeopardize the entire process.
Al Jazeera reports that the outlook for these U.S.-Iran negotiations is now somewhat uncertain, as signals from the Iranian side suggest that crossing this red line will provoke a response.
