Looks like I missed out on a huge return, close to 30x, but in reality, after multiple rounds of dilution over the years, the original shareholding percentage kept decreasing. Based on the current market cap, it’s probably just a few times to maybe 10x or so. Of course, that’s still a decent return. But the question is, who would’ve dared to imagine back then that the market cap would get this high? After all, a lot of the valuation-boosting moves Musk made came later. Plus, back then, there was the uncertainty of when it would go public, whether you could actually get the shares, and even if you did, there’d be a lock-up period. By the time you could sell, who knows what the price would’ve dropped to?
Since we’re reflecting on history and looking back with hindsight, I don’t think this is any better in terms of risk-reward than buying Bitcoin at the bottom and selling at the top. At least the multiples there were just as good, and the funds were liquid with no lock-up period.
