China plans to invest 2 trillion yuan in the next five years to build a national AI computing power network, with domestic chips accounting for over 80% Odaily Planet Daily News: According to Bloomberg citing informed sources, China is planning to invest about 2 trillion yuan (about 295 billion US dollars) in the next five years to build artificial intelligence data centers and a unified computing power network covering the whole country, in order to promote the development of the domestic AI industry and enhance its autonomous computing power. According to reports, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments are formulating relevant blueprints to build an interconnected national computing hub system, with state-owned enterprises such as China Mobile and China Telecom responsible for operating the main data centers. The plan requires at least 80% of key technologies such as AI chips to be sourced from domestic suppliers, including solutions from companies such as Huawei, in order to reduce reliance on American manufacturers such as Nvidia and AMD. This plan is regarded as one of China's most active AI infrastructure construction actions to date, and is also an important component of the "Six Network Construction" strategy proposed this year. According to insiders, the project funds will mainly come from ultra long term special treasury bond and national strategic industry investment funds, supplemented by bank loans and social capital. The report points out that China hopes to achieve interconnectivity of dispersed data center resources nationwide by 2028, and promote the large-scale application of AI in fields such as healthcare, transportation, and urban governance. If the upgrading of the power grid and the construction of communication infrastructure are included in the overall plan, the total investment scale may exceed 5 trillion yuan.
