[AMD Announces £2 Billion Investment in UK AI Infrastructure, Partners with Startup Oriole to Launch World's First Pure Photonic Network AI System]
According to DeepTech TechFlow, on June 8, as reported by Tech Funding News, AMD CEO Lisa Su announced during London Tech Week that the company will invest up to £2 billion in UK AI infrastructure over the next five years. This investment will encompass national supercomputing infrastructure development and academic research collaborations.
At the same time, AMD is partnering with London-based UCL spinout startup Oriole Networks to deploy the world's first large-scale pure photonic network AI system, leveraging the UK government's £50 million ARIA (Advanced Research and Invention Agency) Reasoning Expansion Lab project. The system integrates Oriole's PRISM photonic network platform with AMD Instinct GPUs and EPYC CPUs. By completely eliminating electronic switches in the network core, the system reduces core network energy consumption by 81% and compresses GPU idle time from 60% to less than 1%.
