Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie recently invited me to tour the “Oxford Mall” area in downtown Kingston. This space was originally meant to be a central market district, including Coronation Market, complete with a clock tower and fountains. Sadly, that vision was frozen in time back in 1989. Today, the buildings are in total disrepair, even though many vendors and families from all across Jamaica now call this market home. The main issues here are basic infrastructure like broken roofs, poor water supply, and failing sewage systems. You cannot run a proper market without proper sanitation. While major upgrade work is already underway for the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) and our waterfront sewage lines, I am committing to put pen to paper and plan the rehabilitation of this entire market district next.(Andrew Holness)
