[Zcash Critical Vulnerability Researcher to Audit Monero, Plans to Expand to More Privacy Coin Projects] BlockBeats News, June 6: Security engineer Taylor Hornby, who used the Anthropic Opus 4.8 AI model to discover a critical vulnerability in Zcash, announced that Monero (XMR) has been added to his audit queue, with plans to conduct security reviews for more privacy coin projects in the future. On May 29, Hornby identified a critical vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard privacy pool, which had gone undetected since May 2022. Theoretically, this flaw could have allowed attackers to mint unlimited undetectable counterfeit ZEC. Shielded Labs, the development team, completed an emergency fix by June 1 and subsequently disclosed the details of the vulnerability. Following the announcement, ZEC experienced a 38% drop within 24 hours, as the market expressed concerns that attackers might have exploited the vulnerability to steal funds from the privacy pool without leaving any on-chain traces. Hornby stated that he was commissioned by the nonprofit organization Shielded Labs in April of this year to identify protocol vulnerabilities before they could be exploited by attackers. Despite having the opportunity to profit from the vulnerability, he chose to report the issue to the development team, stating that "such betrayal is unacceptable." Additionally, Hornby plans to apply for funding from the Zcash community to support future security research efforts. [Original Link]
