The Illinois State Legislature has passed the FY 2027 budget, which includes a provision to impose a 0.2% tax on crypto transactions, with the responsibility for collection falling on digital asset brokers. This measure is part of an amendment to the 'Digital Asset Privilege Tax Act' and also includes registration requirements for digital asset brokers. Brokers who fail to comply starting January 1 could face a Class 3 felony in Illinois. The budget still requires Governor JB Pritzker's signature to take effect. State lawmakers estimate the tax could generate $60 million in annual revenue for the state. Industry groups like the Chamber of Digital Commerce have strongly opposed the proposal, stating that it lacks industry consultation and could have a disruptive impact on the sector. (Cointelegraph)
