There has been a lot of discussion about the National Housing Trust (NHT) and the use of its resources. I want Jamaicans to know that every decision made regarding these funds is taken with great care and responsibility.
Despite the challenges we have faced, the NHT continues to deliver meaningful support to thousands of Jamaicans.
Following Hurricane Melissa, the NHT has already approved and distributed more than 5,000 home grants, providing nearly $2 billion in assistance to families rebuilding their homes. The NHT also granted a six-month mortgage moratorium for approximately 36,000 mortgage holders in affected communities and waived the related peril insurance premiums during that period.
In addition, special loans valued at $669 million have helped homeowners upgrade from zinc roofs to stronger slab roofs, while thousands of insurance claims have been processed to support recovery efforts across the island.
These are real benefits reaching real people. While many of these success stories may not always make headlines, they represent important support for Jamaican families when they need it most.(Andrew Holness)
