Privacy coin leader Zcash has just exposed an epic black swan vulnerability. Using the Anthropic Opus 4.8 model released at the end of May, white hat hackers have written the ultimate cheat for printing money out of thin air without trace in just one day! This major math expert has been lurking for a whole four years. On May 29, 2026, security engineer Taylor Hornby discovered a significant forgery vulnerability in the Orchard privacy pool of the privacy cryptocurrency network Zcash, which allows malicious attackers to create counterfeit ZEC tokens out of thin air without trace. This emergency security incident triggered a joint emergency response of the entire Zcash ecosystem. The Zcash Open Development Laboratory (ZODL) and ecological engineers deployed emergency repairs around June 1st and completed the entire network level repair work on June 2nd. Due to the privacy protection feature of Zcash, it is currently impossible to confirm or falsify at the cryptographic level whether the vulnerability has been maliciously abused before it is fixed, which brings long-term uncertainty to the integrity of the total supply of this asset. According to the disclosed details, the vulnerability originates from an unconstrained element in the Orchard circuit, which allows attackers to inject arbitrary false inputs into elliptic curve multiplication but still pass multiplication verification. Hornby successfully wrote and validated a complete utilization program by running highly targeted tests in a local regression testing (regtest) environment, confirming the technical feasibility of producing an unlimited amount of counterfeit currency without trace. It is worth noting that this vulnerability has existed since the activation of Orchard Privacy Pool in May 2022 and has not been publicly discovered for four years. This event will directly impose a trust cost on Zcash holders and the privacy technology ecosystem. In order to re prove the integrity of Zcash supply, Shielded Labs, a privacy laboratory, is collaborating with multiple development teams to promote a network upgrade proposal. The plan is to deploy a new anonymous privacy pool and implement mandatory "revolving accounting" reviews for all existing tokens in the Orchard privacy pool. This means that in order to prove its innocence, Zcash has to temporarily sacrifice some of its incognito features and force a total settlement and cross pool migration of historical anonymous assets, which is a heavy blow to the geek community and the business narrative that emphasizes absolute privacy. The real reason for the rapid localization of vulnerabilities is not due to conventional manual code audits, but rather the sudden intervention of cutting-edge AI tools. Shielded Labs hired Hornby to conduct long-term protocol security research in April 2026. After Anthropic released the Opus 4.8 model on May 28, 2026, Hornby immediately introduced it into a customized AI audit framework and prompt word chain, successfully blasting complex circuit vulnerabilities the next day. The white hat team completed the entire process from discovery to targeted exploitation in the local environment within a very short time window, and quickly disclosed the vulnerability to ZODL engineers.
