Qingdao prosecutor clarifies virtual currency property attributes in 107 Bitcoin theft case
According to Shandong Legal Daily, a Bitcoin theft case prosecuted by the Licang District Prosecutor's Office in Qingdao has been sentenced to 10 years and 9 months in prison and fined 100000 yuan for theft. In the early morning of a certain day in 2024, the victim Feng's virtual currency wallet was quietly logged in, and 107 bitcoins were transferred, equivalent to over 22.54 million yuan at the current market price. After investigation, Feng once entrusted his acquaintance Zhang to assist with the operation. Zhang obtained mnemonic words during the process of registering the wallet on his behalf, and after multiple attempts in the early morning, he cracked the wallet and transferred Bitcoin. After Zhang appeared in court, he claimed that his actions were a "protective takeover" taken to prevent Bitcoin from being stolen by others. The prosecution traced the funds and found that the stolen Bitcoin was transferred layer by layer and exchanged for more than 660000 yuan, exposing his lies.
