Wu Blockchain has learned that a Galaxy Research report states an anonymous plaintiff, Noah Doe, along with two Wyoming LLCs, filed a lawsuit in the New York County Supreme Court in March 2026. The lawsuit seeks to confirm their legal ownership of 39,069 long-dormant Bitcoin addresses containing approximately 3,799,629 BTC, valued at around $293.5 billion as of May 25, 2026. This includes about 1.096 million BTC allegedly belonging to Satoshi Nakamoto, approximately 79,957 BTC from Mt. Gox hacker addresses, and around 2,131 BTC from Counterparty burn addresses.
Galaxy Research believes the legal basis of the lawsuit is questionable, citing reasons such as the plaintiff not holding private keys or having actual control over the BTC. Instead, they valued each address at less than $10 to apply a faster ownership claim process and attempted alternative service via OP_RETURN on-chain notifications. The report notes that even if the plaintiff wins the case, they would not gain access to the private keys or be able to transfer the BTC. However, they might assert rights to the BTC if it enters centralized exchanges or custodial platforms. Long-term dormancy does not equate to abandonment of ownership.
