[NVIDIA Invests Over $6.5 Billion in Photonics Technology to Address AI Data Center Interconnect Bottlenecks] According to DeepTech TechFlow, since March this year, NVIDIA has committed to investing at least $6.5 billion in companies related to photonics and optical networking to tackle the challenges of data transmission and energy consumption faced by AI data centers. Public information reveals that NVIDIA has invested approximately $2 billion each in Lumentum, Coherent, and Marvell, and $500 million in Corning for the development of optical connection systems. Additionally, NVIDIA participated in a $500 million Series E funding round for photonics startup Ayar Labs. Photonics technology, which uses optical signals instead of traditional electrical signals for data transmission, can significantly enhance network bandwidth while reducing energy consumption. As the scale of AI models continues to expand, the demand for data exchange between GPU clusters is growing rapidly, making network interconnects a critical bottleneck in the development of AI infrastructure. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang previously stated that the company is accelerating the application of silicon photonics technology in network platforms and GPU interconnect systems, while market demand has already exceeded current supply capacity. Analysts believe that related industries such as optical modules, lasers, and optical fibers are likely to benefit continuously from the trend of AI infrastructure upgrades.
