Google's open-source AI chip blueprint lands for the first time, with the all-new Coral development board ready to run Gemma 3 out of the box According to Beating monitoring, Google Research has partnered with semiconductor manufacturer Synaptics to launch a limited edition Coral Dev Board development board, marking the first commercial achievement of Google's edge AI hardware transition to open-source RISC-V architecture strategy. As early as October 2025, Google had completely open sourced the Coral NPU drawings based on the open RISC-V architecture, stepping back as a pure architect and standard setter, and no longer selling physical chips. As the first commercial chip and hardware crystallization of Google's open-source NPU drawings in the industry, the new development board is equipped with the Synaptics Astra SL2610 chip, which integrates Google's open-source NPU. Under the acceleration of 1 TOPS computing power hardware, the development board completes end-to-end deep optimization from the factory, and can smoothly run Google's latest Gemma 3 270M lightweight large language model locally from the box. Developers do not need to connect to the cloud, nor do they need to bear any network or API fees, to have a completely private local generative AI experience at extremely low power consumption. On the hardware interface, the development board is equipped with CSI/DSI video interface, USB, microphone input, and supports wireless connection through M.2 expansion slot, greatly reducing the access cost of smart homes, wearable devices, and robots. In terms of software, the system is adapted to the Torq open-source toolchain based on MLIR and IREE compiler architectures, supporting unified compilation and efficient quantization deployment of models trained on PyTorch, JAX, and TensorFlow frameworks. Due to the complete open source and standardization of the underlying chip architecture, developers can achieve seamless execution on any compatible chip by writing code at once, completely breaking free from the dilemma of being bound by a single chip giant ecosystem in the past.
