Former SpaceX astronaut Garrett Reisman recently revealed in a public interview the core decision-making mechanism by which Elon Musk manages his business empire.
Reisman pointed out that Musk does not use traditional financial return rates or conventional risk assessment models when evaluating almost all major business decisions, but relies on an extremely single and concrete evaluation metric:
Can this decision accelerate the process of establishing a self-sufficient colony for humans on Mars. This ultimate goal serves as a physical prism that filters all of its commercial actions.
Driven by this extreme vision, SpaceX's engineering team has long endured sunk costs and execution pressures far beyond industry norms.
Resman confirmed that Musk is accustomed to unilaterally setting extremely aggressive and uncompromising timelines during project progress, and using this frequency to pressure engineering teams.
Due to the extremely high physical complexity of aerospace engineering and deep space exploration, the development cycle is often difficult to accurately predict through linear logic, which also leads to frequent delays in SpaceX's actual project progress.
However, this extreme pressure action objectively pushes the efficiency of communication and collaboration within the organization to a physical limit, forcing the team to optimize workflows as they repeatedly approach deadlines.
This management model is highly controversial in traditional business logic, as it constantly squeezes the physical and psychological limits of employees while also incurring high labor turnover costs.
But at the level of capital and resource distribution, this approach of consolidating all business actions - from Tesla's cash flow feedback to Starlink's global low orbit satellite network deployment - into a single ultimate narrative has given Musk's entities a high ability to absorb funds.
All delays and technical failures have been hedged by market tolerance into acceptable trial and error costs in the face of the grand picture of "Mars immigration". Musk's business empire has formatted complex aerospace heavy industry into an automated engineering engine driven by a single instruction set, with high-intensity iterations.
