Insiders: SpaceX's Starlink and Amazon may participate in EU mobile satellite spectrum program
According to two directly informed sources on Tuesday, Elon Musk's "Starlink" and Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite business may receive some European mobile satellite spectrum next year. But they stated that two-thirds of the satellite spectrum will be reserved for European companies, which can enable seamless communication between mobile devices and vehicles even in remote areas. The licenses held by American companies Viasat and EchoStar will expire in May 2027, while the European Commission is considering how to allocate future spectrum resources. At the same time, the EU is committed to reducing its dependence on American technology. According to informed sources, as a response to Starlink, the EU's IRIS2 multi orbit satellite array (consisting of 290 satellites) will be among the European companies that have obtained partial spectrum. Insiders say that companies from the UK and Norway can also bid for licenses. One of the sources said that the details of the proposal scheduled to be announced on Wednesday may still be subject to changes at the committee meeting held that day.
