[Vitalik: The worst outcome of making a company more 'idealistic' is slowed development, the best outcome is gaining community support] Foresight News reports that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin tweeted that if a company becomes more 'dogmatic' in order to uphold its principles (e.g., giving Richard Stallman veto power over Google), the worst outcome would be slowed development for the company, while other companies would continue advancing technological progress. In sensitive fields like AGI and military technology, such a slowdown might historically be considered detrimental, but in the current context, it could be acceptable or even beneficial. The best outcome, however, would be a company that deeply aligns with community values, thereby gaining spontaneous support, talent, and marketing resources from the community—support that cannot be easily obtained through money alone. He noted that some AI companies have previously attempted to achieve similar effects through Effective Altruism, but due to the susceptibility of consequentialism to corruption, the ultimate results were limited.
