Bolivia's previous 2,400% surge in hashrate was mainly driven by short-term electricity price arbitrage enabled by government-subsidized natural gas. However, as pressure on natural gas imports increases, the benefits are fading. What truly holds long-term value is the initiative by Alps and local partners to revitalize the 127MW idle thermal power plant in Cochabamba through a self-use, USD-settlement model. This approach bypasses distortions in the local currency exchange rate and generates foreign exchange income for the government.
In the long run, Bolivia still has potential in hydropower, solar, and geothermal energy. If a stable regulatory framework can be established and institutional capital attracted, the country might replicate Paraguay's path to mining success.
