[ECB Governing Council Member Coeure: Iran War Drives Up Prices, ECB Faces Rate Hike Pressure]
Jin10 News, May 24 – ECB Governing Council member Coeure stated that unless a sustainable peace agreement can be reached between the U.S. and Iran, the European Central Bank will face pressure to raise interest rates next month. Inflation levels in the Eurozone this year may exceed previous expectations, while countries are still dealing with earlier price shocks. Meanwhile, the economy has shown considerable resilience.
'There are always some extremely low-probability scenarios that lead to different assessments of the situation, but for now, all signs indicate that we will be deciding between maintaining rates and raising them,' Coeure said. 'And for me, it is clear that if the situation does not improve, we will have to focus our discussions on taking action.'
He also noted that it is not appropriate to make any commitments at this time, as doing so would be meaningless. The level of uncertainty is very high, so too many options should not be ruled out prematurely. Of course, there is hope for positive developments.
