In 2016, a Japanese ice cream company released a nationwide commercial apologizing for raising the price of its ice cream bars from 60 yen to 70 yen, marking the first price increase in roughly 25 years. The increase was only about 10 cents, but the company still issued a formal apology to customers.
The 2016 commercial from Akagi Nyugyo gained widespread attention in Japan for treating a very small price increase with remarkable seriousness. Many viewers found it amusing and somewhat surreal that the company delivered a formal apology, complete with deep bows, over a rise of just 10 yen.
At the same time, others praised the gesture as a reflection of strong customer respect and transparency. After keeping prices unchanged for roughly 25 years, the company chose to openly acknowledge the increase rather than quietly raising the cost.(Historic Vids)
