[The German Bundestag Rejects Proposal to Increase Cryptocurrency Taxes]
According to Cryptopolitan, the Finance Committee of the German Bundestag has rejected a proposal by the Green Party to increase cryptocurrency taxes. The proposal aimed to abolish the tax exemption policy for selling cryptocurrencies held for more than one year. Current German law stipulates that capital gains from the sale of cryptocurrencies held for over a year are exempt from taxation. The Green Party argued that this regulation is unreasonable and advocated for cryptocurrency assets to be treated on par with other investments. However, critics pointed out that the proposal would impose a higher tax burden on cryptocurrency investors compared to ordinary stock investors. The CDU/CSU within the ruling coalition stated that the proposal does not close loopholes and might even create new ones. The SPD expressed a preference to wait for the Finance Minister to present their own plan. The Green Party estimated that abolishing the tax exemption policy could generate approximately €11.4 billion in additional annual tax revenue.
