US officials say third round of talks between Israel and Lebanon 'productive and positive'
According to a report by Golden Finance, on May 15th, officials from the US State Department stated on the 14th that the third round of talks between Israel and Lebanon held in Washington D.C. that day was "productive and positive", and the talks will continue on the 15th. The US media quoted the official as saying that the talks on that day began at 9:00 local time and ended 8 hours later, but no further details were provided. The report states that this round of talks marks a step towards more substantive negotiations between Israel and Lebanon. In addition to the ambassadors of the two countries to the United States, Lebanese envoy and former Lebanese ambassador to the United States Simon Karam, as well as senior Israeli security officials, also participated in the talks on that day.
The report points out that this meeting is taking place at a time when the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is about to end, but there are still significant differences between the two sides. A senior Lebanese official said on the 14th that the Lebanese side hopes to first achieve a comprehensive ceasefire and then negotiate on the withdrawal of Israeli troops. As for the issue of Hezbollah armed groups in Lebanon, it will be resolved through domestic political channels after the ceasefire. Earlier that day, a government official told Xinhua News Agency that this round of negotiations aims to disarm Hezbollah and reach an agreement to establish formal diplomatic relations with Lebanon.
