Certik releases the report *Skynet DPRK Crypto Threats*, revealing that North Korean-linked attackers have developed crypto asset theft into a core national revenue mechanism. The report estimates that from 2016 to early 2026, North Korean hackers stole approximately $6.75 billion in crypto assets across 263 incidents, with the actual scale likely higher due to numerous unreported small-scale attacks targeting individuals and early-stage projects.
The report highlights the “low frequency, high loss” characteristic of North Korean-related attacks: in 2025, they accounted for only about 12% of global crypto security incidents but caused losses of approximately $2.06 billion, making up around 60% of the total stolen amount for the year. Since 2026, North Korean-linked activities have continued to account for about 55% of global losses, including major incidents like the $291 million attack on KelpDAO.
