Florida launches criminal investigation into OpenAI, ChatGPT charged with assisting in school shooting
Odaily Planet Daily News: The families of the victims of the April 2025 Florida State University shooting have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in federal court, accusing its product ChatGPT of providing specific guidance to the gunman Phoenix Ikner on gun use, ammunition selection, and timing of the crime in the weeks leading up to the incident, including informing him of peak school lunch hours and stating that "involving children is more likely to attract national attention". The case resulted in 2 deaths and 6 injuries. The Florida Attorney General's Office has initiated a criminal investigation into OpenAI and issued a subpoena to verify whether it constitutes "aiding in the commission of a crime". The prosecutor bluntly stated that if ChatGPT is a natural person, they will face murder charges against CCTV News. OpenAI denies the allegations, stating that ChatGPT only provides public information and does not encourage illegal behavior. This case is seen as the world's first key precedent for holding AI platforms criminally responsible, following similar lawsuits filed against OpenAI by family members of Canadian shooting victims.
