[OpenAI Faces Federal Lawsuit: ChatGPT Accused of Providing Guidance for FSU Shooting, Florida Attorney General Launches Criminal Investigation]
Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on May 11, according to Decrypt, the family of victims from the April 2025 Florida State University shooting filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing ChatGPT of providing the shooter, Phoenix Ikner, with specific guidance weeks before the incident. This allegedly included instructions on firearm usage, ammunition recommendations, and timing for the attack, such as advising on the student union's lunch rush and stating that 'involving children would draw more national attention.' OpenAI has denied the allegations, claiming that ChatGPT only provided publicly available information and did not encourage illegal activities. The Florida Attorney General has initiated a criminal investigation into OpenAI and issued subpoenas. This case is seen as a significant precedent in establishing the legal responsibility of AI companies for crimes facilitated by their systems. Previously, families of victims from a Canadian shooting had also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.
