[Indian Prime Minister Urges Citizens to Stop Buying Gold, Jewelry Stocks Plummet]
Odaily Planet Daily News – Indian Prime Minister Modi has called on Indian citizens to avoid purchasing gold for at least one year in order to protect foreign exchange reserves. In India, gold plays a crucial role in savings, weddings, and religious festivals, making this appeal surprising. On Sunday, Modi stated: 'Within one year, under any circumstances, we should not buy gold jewelry.' He also urged citizens to reduce fuel consumption and unnecessary overseas travel. Modi pointed out that India spends a significant amount annually on gold imports, and citizens should avoid purchasing non-essential items.
To what extent Indian citizens will respond to Modi's call remains uncertain, but local jewelry manufacturers' stocks broadly declined on Monday. Shares of India's largest jeweler, Titan Co., fell as much as 6.6%, while Senco Gold and Kalyan Jewellers India saw their stock prices drop by 10.8% and 9.5%, respectively. (Jin10)
