Do Chinese people still have privacy?
900 million records—that’s the number of personal information entries stolen from Chinese citizens by two young individuals between 2023 and 2025.
Their business model was simple: set up a social engineering database website, and in a Telegram group with over 2,000 members, allow people to input a phone number, pay a few USDT, and access someone else’s bank details, home address, and even passwords. They sold this information over 1,300 times.
Punishing these two individuals doesn’t solve the root problem. The key lies in how the information was sold—many platforms and insiders are the real issue.
