[Japanese Government Debt Hits Record High for 10 Consecutive Years] According to a report by Jinse Finance, on May 9, data released by Japan's Ministry of Finance on May 8 shows that as of the end of March 2026, the total amount of government debt, including Japanese government bonds, loans, and short-term government securities, reached 1,343.84 trillion yen (approximately 1 USD = 156.7 yen), an increase of 20.13 trillion yen compared to the end of the previous fiscal year, marking a record high for 10 consecutive years. The data indicates that the total amount of Japanese government bonds stands at 1,207.22 trillion yen, with general government bonds, which rely primarily on tax revenue to repay principal and interest, increasing by 24.56 trillion yen to 1,104.30 trillion yen, serving as the main source of the growth in Japanese government bonds.
