[Beijing Court Discloses Virtual Currency 'Loot Box' Case: Main Offender Sentenced to 7 Years for Illegally Obtaining Over 900 Million Pieces of Citizen Information]

Between 2023 and 2025, the defendant illegally obtained citizens' personal information through encrypted communication tools and other channels, amassing over 900 million pieces of data. Additionally, the defendant built a 'social engineering database' website to store over 170 million pieces of citizen information and profited by selling the data using virtual currency payment methods. Furthermore, the defendant used encrypted communication tools to establish 'loot box targeting' groups to disseminate illegal information that infringed on privacy. The court sentenced the main offender, Lin XX, to 7 years in prison for the crimes of infringing on citizens' personal information and illegally utilizing information networks, along with a fine of 70,000 yuan.
