According to IT Home citing a typical case from China's Supreme People's Court, two defendants were sentenced for illegally obtaining over 900 million pieces of citizens' personal information and using it for 'doxxing' and online harassment. The case revealed that between 2023 and 2025, defendants Lin XX and Wang XX stole massive amounts of private data via encrypted communication tools, built a 'social engineering database' website containing 170 million records, and profited by selling the data through methods like cryptocurrency payments. After trial, the Beijing Haidian District People's Court sentenced Lin XX and Wang XX to 7 years and 5 years and 6 months in prison, respectively, for crimes including infringing on citizens' personal information and illegally using information networks, along with corresponding fines.
