Going to a mall in China now feels like playing a massive online game called Earth Online. As soon as you approach a restaurant, the 'NPC' at the door automatically triggers a storyline and waves at you. Then, when you step inside, all the NPCs in the store simultaneously shout some incomprehensible welcome phrases. Finally, when you’ve ordered and the food is served, another NPC suddenly triggers a scene, dancing and loudly shouting lines so cringe-worthy they make your toes curl.
