Hassett reveals White House plans to establish a review mechanism for AI models
Golden Finance reported on May 6th that the Director of the National Economic Council, Hassett, revealed on Wednesday that the White House is studying an executive order to establish a review mechanism for new generation artificial intelligence models such as Anthropic's Mythos to protect corporate and government networks from AI related cybersecurity risks. Hassett said, "We are studying and may even launch an executive order to clarify a roadmap for the future for everyone, that is, AI systems that may bring security vulnerabilities in the future should go through a process of being proven safe before being opened to the public, just like FDA approved drugs. ”The brewing of this command has only been a few weeks since Anthropic revealed its breakthrough model Mythos. Anthropic claims that the model is adept at detecting network vulnerabilities and may pose a global cybersecurity risk. At present, the company only opens access to a few large technology and financial enterprises, while the Trump administration has been pushing for federal agencies to access Mythos to test government systems. Hassett said, "We have mobilized the entire government and private sector to take coordinated action to ensure that the model has been fully tested before it is truly opened to the public, to ensure that it will not cause any harm to American companies or the US government." It is currently unclear whether the executive order will require AI systems to undergo mandatory testing. If true, this will mark a change in Trump's stance on AI issues, as he has previously emphasized a "hands off" approach to regulating AI.
