[U.S. Prosecutors Request Leniency for Former Celsius Executive Due to Cooperation] May 6 news: U.S. prosecutors have recommended leniency for former Celsius executive Roni Cohen-Pavon due to his substantial cooperation. Cohen-Pavon, who served as the Chief Revenue Officer of the now-bankrupt crypto lending platform Celsius, pleaded guilty in September 2023 to charges of fraud and conspiracy to manipulate the price of the CEL token. The case is tied to the 2022 collapse of Celsius, which resulted in billions of dollars in losses. In a letter submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, prosecutor Jay Clayton emphasized that Cohen-Pavon is willing to testify against former CEO Alex Mashinsky. His cooperation, once made public, could likely prompt Mashinsky to plead guilty earlier. Mashinsky was sentenced to 12 years in prison in May 2025. Prosecutors did not propose a specific sentence but requested the judge to consider sentencing guidelines and grant an "appropriate reduction." Cohen-Pavon's attorney has requested "time served," arguing that he has taken full responsibility. The sentencing hearing, originally scheduled for May 7, has been postponed to May 13.
